California in January: Androids, fries and SFELC

Mountain View’s Android statues, an engineering summit and In-N-Out in January 2019.

January’s California visit mixed an engineering summit with a return to the Android statues in Mountain View. I also stopped at In-N-Out on Rengstorff.

Mountain View: the Android statues

Android Nougat had been missing from the lawn on my previous visit. In January I finally found where it had been moved, and Oreo was now out on the lawn too.

Oreo stood with a giant cookie in front of its body, next to another oversized dessert. I had been told that children hanging from Nougat’s arm had broken it. My note at the time called it the “sad story of a sad robot.”

SFELC Summit

The SFELC 2019 Summit brought engineering managers together for talks and conversations. My caption joked that it was a place to gossip about company politics—and then some more company politics.

The animal-style fries were covered in onions, cheese and sauce. I posted them as “Batista Fries,” then confirmed in the replies that they were animal style.

I was not entirely won over by the chain. My verdict in the conversation was that people went to In-N-Out because of scarcity rather than taste.
