The Rome stops in 2015 included the Colosseum, Piazza Navona and Piazza del Popolo: ancient masonry, elaborate fountains and two very different city squares.

The Colosseum

The Colosseum’s outer arches led to a much more complicated interior of curved tiers, exposed masonry and passages beneath the open sky.

Also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, it was built in the first century CE. Several levels of arches and walkways surrounded the arena.

Piazza Navona

An obelisk rose above carved fountain figures at Piazza Navona, with a domed church immediately behind. Pale stone and elaborate sculpture filled this part of the square.

Piazza del Popolo

At Piazza del Popolo, two domed church fronts stood beside one another across a broad paved space. Their paired façades were a very different sight from Piazza Navona’s fountain and obelisk.
