Malaysia, a feeding frenzy

Johor Bahru plates and a catch-up with former colleagues.

Food was the theme of my Malaysia 2024 outings: a trip to Johor Bahru and a catch-up with former colleagues. I called the latter a “feeding frenzy,” with a healthy dose of food and gossip.

Johor Bahru

“What the Rock is cooking” was my announcement for the Johor Bahru outing. The table had plenty going on: dumplings covered in red sauce, sesame seeds and spring onions, and a bowl crowded with skewers. Lotus-root slices and folded vegetables sit among the sticks.

The dessert bowl adds a different set of colours: shaved ice, dark jelly and small coloured balls, with separate little jugs and a golden spoon on the tray.

Meals with former colleagues

Our catch-up included burgers at myBurgerLab, piled high beneath dark buns. One tray pairs a burger with fries; another is crowded with fried sides, chips and several dips.

There was a rice plate too, with a browned chicken leg, cucumber and a generous serving of dark sauce. “Feeding frenzy” was a fairly efficient description of the spread.
